The name comes from the Greek onyx, meaning nail, claw, or veined gem. Along with agate, onyx is a variety of chalcedony, a group of crystalline quartzes. As are other chalcedonies, onyx is usually marked with white or colored bands. Today, black onyx is often carved into jewelry especially cameos and other ornamental objects.
Black onyx is subtle and sophisticated on its own and the perfect setting to highlight the stunning effect of pearls or diamonds.
